If you’re anything like me, you can binge-watch fitness and skincare videos like they’re the newest season of Game of Thrones (but if they’re about health, that counts as being productive, right?)
Navigating the fitness YouTube scene can be, in a word, overwhelming. Colorful, bold block letters teasing #bootygains come at you left and right. You scroll down miles of ab selfie thumbnails. You think you’ve seen enough Gymshark apparel to memorize their entire Fall collection.
Wading through the endless fitness content is off-putting for many, but once you peel back the layers of supplement sponsorships and ads for self-made workout apps, real, valuable information from passionate individuals in the fitness community rises to the top.
With all that being said, you’ll find my top five favorite fitness YouTubers below (in no particular order, that would be like choosing a favorite child). Each one not only provides sound information and tips for anyone from the beginner cardio bunnies to the bonafide gym buff, but also transcends the realm of simple hiit workout demonstrations into a world where fitness can be a fun and meaningful lifestyle in their own unique way.
Ah, Chloe. The adorable little (I’m not kidding, she’s 5’1”) aussie from Sydney. Her personality is endearingly awkward, and her 10-minute ab circuits pack a serious punch.
Seriously, though, incorporating her ab routines into my workouts every other day have been the best thing to ever happen to my midsection. They’re quick, effective, always incorporate some elements of hiit cardio, and the structure of her videos allow you to follow along with each timed exercise so you don’t have to mess with your own timer.
Chloe is an extremely accessible fitness blogger. Her workouts are challenging sans intimidation factors.
Bonus: As she jet-sets around Europe (she doubles as a travel vlogger, honestly what a life), she takes the time to shoot outdoor workouts via drone. Pairing a hiit set with such epic, high-def footage almost seems funny to me, but I’m not opposed.
Whitney Simmons is one of the classics. A go-to. An OG. Someone who lays down no-fuss, no-bullshit advice and workouts without wasting much of your time. Sometimes you just don’t feel like hearing about every detail of the vlogger’s day and would rather cut straight to the good stuff, right?
In terms of workouts, Whitney Simmons is one of the more outspoken proponents of minimal cardio, maximum strength training. Her lifts are killer and she’s got the booty to prove it.
Bonus: Besides the classic workout vids Whitney churns out left and right, she covers topics equally as near and dear to my heart (how to make going to the gym less awkward, guides to developing a training split, gym bag must-haves, you get the idea).
I know I said choosing a favorite YouTuber is like choosing a favorite child, but Natacha Oceane is the possible exception. She is equal parts impressive, inspiring, accessible, and entertaining.
Her strength and resistance workouts never cease to amaze me. She’s an actual beast in the gym. She sticks primarily to functional workouts which lean heavily on the more advanced side, but her videos are peppered with invaluable bits of advice that can be applicable to beginners and seasoned vets alike (and she makes sure her workouts are easily adaptable for those who aren’t too keen on tire flips and sled pulls).
Natacha has created a persona for herself that doesn’t feel like a persona at all; down-to-earth barely even begins to describe her. She has opened up countless times in her videos about previous struggles with binge eating disorder and overtraining, expounding bravery by lending her most vulnerable side to the millions of people who have tuned in to her videos.
Bonus: Check out her ‘cheat day’ videos. They are honestly mind-blowing.
Strength training meets cardio circuits meets minimalism meets meal prep. What more could you ask for? Rachel Aust, another vlogger from Australia (seriously, is everyone walking around in that country with a 6-pack?), gives us a comprehensive look at someone who seriously seems like they’ve got their life together.
This probably won’t come as a surprise at this point, but Rachel’s workouts are primarily comprised of hiit cardio circuits and strength training. I tend to gravitate toward that structure of workout, can you tell?
Her videos open up a dialogue about issues that aren’t simply weight based. It’s so, so easy to fall into a pit of narrow-minded concern regarding numbers on scales. Rachel’s discussions of going beyond outer appearances via her own consistent updates of her life with PCOS and insulin resistance remind us that there are much more important matters for women than worrying about things as trivial as stretch marks or cellulite.
Bonus: Her instagram is one of those instagrams that I look at and wish it was my own. I swear, scrolling through it should be prescribed as a legitimate alternative to xanax (black, grey, white, and millennial pink? Yes please).
Alright, Abby Pollock is another example of a fitness blogger who isn’t for everyone, as her blunt personality (and Canadian accent) can be a bit off-putting. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. However, Abby covers a crucial facet of strength training with more thoughtfulness and emphasis than I’ve seen anywhere else: Proper form.
Every single exercise demonstration comes with an lengthy explanation of proper and improper form. Every. Single. One. To make matters more impressive, she always makes an effort to display the research behind any claims she makes by citing specific scientific studies in her videos. Seriously, the attention to detail in her videos is superior bar none.
Bonus: Abby’s videos can be especially useful for beginners new to strength training. The last thing a transitioning cardio bunny (i.e., me a few months ago) needs is to get injured in the pursuit of #gainz.
